Mouth Tape with a Beard: How to Make It Stick (and Come Off Gently)

Tape is made to stick to skin, not hair. If you have a beard or a moustache, mouth tape tends to lift off at night and pull hairs in the morning. Here is how to work with facial hair, and when a different approach makes more sense.

Zzip is a smart mouth tape in development: it keeps your mouth closed and measures what happens while you sleep. See what makes it different ↓

Why mouth tape and beards do not get along

Adhesive works by making close contact with a smooth surface. Hair gets in the way: the tape sticks to the hair instead of the skin underneath, so it lifts at the edges, especially once you start moving, sweating or talking in your sleep. Beard oil and balm make it worse, because oil weakens adhesion.

The second problem is removal. The Sleep Foundation notes that tape can pull on facial hair, making removal painful or irritating. Repeated pulling on hair and skin is how adhesive skin irritation builds up over time. Experts who study adhesive skin injuries treat both application and removal technique as key to preventing them.

Which mouth tape shape works best with a beard?

Where the tape sits matters more than the brand. The goal is to keep adhesive on lip and bare skin, and off hair, as much as possible. Our guide to types of mouth tape covers each design in detail.

DesignWith a beard or moustacheNotes
Narrow vertical stripUsually bestSits mostly on the lips; smallest contact with hair
Strip with a central openingGood if the edges reach bare skinAllows some airflow; edges may sit in the moustache
Wide horizontal stripOften liftsCovers moustache and chin hair; more pulling on removal

How to apply mouth tape with a beard

  1. Check your nose first. Close your mouth and breathe only through your nose for a few minutes. If that is hard, skip the tape tonight.
  2. Wash and dry the area. Clean off food, sweat and any beard oil or balm around the lips. Let it dry fully.
  3. Skip lip balm right before. If your lips are dry, apply balm earlier in the evening so it has time to absorb.
  4. Trim the lip line. A short, neat moustache edge above the upper lip, and a trimmed area just below the lower lip, gives the tape bare skin to grip. You do not need to shave the whole area.
  5. Place the strip on the lips. Close your lips gently, centre a narrow strip vertically and press it for a few seconds so the adhesive warms and settles.
  6. Try it awake first. Wear it for 10 to 20 minutes while reading to see whether it holds and feels comfortable. The step-by-step basics are in how to mouth tape.

How to remove it without pulling hair

Removal technique is where most beard discomfort comes from. Clinicians who manage adhesive skin injuries recommend peeling tape slowly, at a low angle and close to the skin, folding it back over itself in the direction of hair growth rather than ripping it upward.

  • Loosen an edge first, using a pull tab if the tape has one.
  • Support the skin with a finger next to the tape as you peel.
  • Use warm water or a damp warm cloth if it is stuck firmly. A little oil applied after the tape is off can help remove residue.
  • Do not rip it off quickly. Fast, high-angle removal pulls more hair and stresses the skin.

Redness that lingers, small bumps around hair follicles, or broken skin are signs to pause for a few nights. If your skin reacts often, see mouth tape for sensitive skin.

When a chin strap or no tape is the better choice

If you have a full, dense moustache and do not want to trim it, tape may never hold well. A chin strap works without adhesive by supporting the jaw, which some bearded people find easier. It has its own trade-offs, which we compare in mouth tape vs chin strap.

And some nights, no tape is the right call. Facial hair does not change the basic safety rules. A 2025 systematic review flagged the risk of mouth closure for anyone with a blocked nose. Skip tape when:

  • your nose is stuffy, you have a cold or allergies are flaring;
  • you have had alcohol or taken sedatives or sleeping pills;
  • you snore loudly, gasp or stop breathing in your sleep, or feel very sleepy during the day. These need a doctor;
  • you feel nauseous or anxious with your mouth covered.

Frequently asked questions

Does mouth tape work if you have a beard?

It can, if most of the adhesive sits on your lips and bare skin. Narrow vertical strips and a trimmed lip line help. Wide strips over a moustache often lift during the night.

Do I need to shave to use mouth tape?

No. Trimming the moustache edge above the lip and the area just below the lower lip is usually enough. Full shaving is not necessary.

Why does mouth tape fall off my moustache at night?

Adhesive sticks to hair instead of skin, and oil from skin or beard products weakens it further. Clean, dry skin and a shape that avoids hair help most.

How do I remove mouth tape without pulling my beard?

Peel slowly and low, close to the skin, in the direction of hair growth, while supporting the skin with your other hand. Warm water helps loosen stubborn tape.

Is a chin strap better than mouth tape for men with beards?

A chin strap avoids adhesive, so it can be easier with facial hair. It works differently and has its own downsides, and neither is a treatment for sleep apnea.
