Dry Mouth at Night: Causes, Treatment and When to Worry

Reaching for the water glass at 3 a.m. is easy to shrug off. But a mouth that keeps drying out at night has a cause, and it is not always the obvious one. Here are the main reasons for night-time dry mouth, how to tell them apart and what actually helps.

Zzip is a smart mouth tape in development: it keeps your mouth closed and measures what happens while you sleep. See what makes it different ↓

Why dry mouth is worse at night

Saliva does a lot of quiet work: it keeps the mouth moist, helps you swallow, washes away food particles and carries minerals that protect your teeth. The US National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research (NIDCR) notes that a lack of it raises the risk of tooth decay and fungal infections.

At night several things stack up. You are not drinking for hours, you swallow less often, and saliva production follows a daily rhythm. If anything else reduces saliva or dries out the mouth, the night is when you feel it most. The medical name for the sensation of dry mouth is xerostomia.

The main causes of dry mouth at night

1. Breathing through your mouth

Air moving over the tongue and gums all night dries them out, however much saliva you make. Cleveland Clinic lists mouth breathing among the causes of dry mouth and notes that sleeping with your mouth open can leave it feeling dry. This is often the most common cause in otherwise healthy people. Why it happens, from a blocked nose to large tonsils, is covered in our guide to mouth breathing while sleeping.

2. Medicines

Medicines are the leading cause of dry mouth overall. Both NIDCR and Cleveland Clinic say hundreds of medications can reduce saliva. Common groups include:

  • antihistamines and decongestants;
  • antidepressants and anti-anxiety medicines;
  • some blood pressure medicines;
  • bladder control medicines and other anticholinergics;
  • some pain medicines and drugs for Parkinson’s disease.

Taking several of these together adds up. If your dry mouth started soon after a new prescription, that is a useful clue for your doctor. Do not stop any medicine on your own.

3. Diabetes

Diabetes is one of the conditions NIDCR links to dry mouth. A 2025 meta-analysis of 23 studies with 2,486 people with type 2 diabetes estimated that around 42% reported xerostomia, though the authors noted most studies were small. High blood sugar also brings thirst and night-time urination, which can make the dry feeling worse. If you have new night-time thirst together with frequent urination or tiredness, ask a doctor about checking your blood sugar.

4. Menopause and hormonal changes

Many women notice a drier mouth around menopause. In a small 2021 case-control study of 60 postmenopausal women, those who reported oral dryness had lower salivary estradiol levels, and 28 of the 30 women in that group described dry mouth at night. Their symptoms eased after hormone therapy. The study was small, so treat it as a pointer rather than proof, but it is a reason to mention night-time dry mouth to your doctor or gynaecologist.

5. Other medical causes

Sjögren’s disease, an autoimmune condition that targets moisture-producing glands, is a classic cause. Others include radiation therapy to the head and neck, some cancer treatments, HIV, nerve damage and, according to Cleveland Clinic, neurological conditions such as stroke and Alzheimer’s disease.

6. Everyday dryers

Alcohol, caffeine and tobacco all dry the mouth, especially in the evening. So does a hot, dry bedroom, a fan blowing on your face or simply not drinking enough during the day.

Dry mouth at night: treatment that helps

  1. Fix the airflow first. If your nose is blocked, treat that before anything else: saline rinses, allergy care and, if it is chronic, an ENT visit. Sleeping on your side can help the mouth stay closed.
  2. Humidify the bedroom. NIDCR suggests using a humidifier at night. Keep it clean according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Review your medicines. A doctor may be able to change the dose, the timing or the drug. Bring a full list, including over-the-counter allergy and sleep aids.
  4. Cut evening dryers. Limit alcohol and caffeine in the evening and avoid tobacco.
  5. Keep water by the bed, but drink through the day too. NIDCR suggests sipping water regularly and with meals.
  6. Stimulate saliva. Sugar-free gum or sugar-free sweets, some with xylitol, can help during the evening. Do not fall asleep with anything in your mouth.
  7. Ask about saliva substitutes. Over-the-counter gels and sprays can coat the mouth overnight. For some conditions a doctor may prescribe saliva-stimulating medicine.
  8. Protect your teeth. Brush with fluoride toothpaste before bed and keep up dental check-ups, since dry mouth raises the risk of decay.

Does mouth tape help dry mouth at night?

If mouth breathing is the cause and your nose is completely clear, keeping the lips closed may reduce overnight drying. That has not been well studied, and mouth tape does nothing for dry mouth caused by medicines, diabetes or hormones. Never use it with a blocked nose, after alcohol or sedatives, or if you suspect sleep apnea. Read mouth tape for sleeping before trying it.

When to see a doctor or dentist

  • dry mouth most nights for more than a few weeks;
  • dry mouth together with dry eyes, joint pain or swollen glands;
  • increased thirst, frequent urination or unexplained weight loss;
  • new cavities, mouth sores or trouble swallowing;
  • loud snoring, gasping or breathing pauses during sleep.

Not just tape.
A mouth band that understands your night.

If you are not sure whether your mouth is open at night, it is hard to know where to start. Zzip is being developed to measure whether you breathe through your nose or mouth during sleep, which can help separate airflow-related dryness from other causes.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my mouth so dry at night?

The most common reasons are breathing through your mouth, medicines that reduce saliva, health conditions such as diabetes or Sjögren’s, hormonal changes and dehydration from alcohol, caffeine or dry air. At night you also go hours without drinking, so any of these is felt more strongly.

What deficiency causes dry mouth at night?

Dry mouth is more often linked to medicines, mouth breathing or medical conditions than to a vitamin deficiency. If you are concerned about nutrition, a doctor can check with a blood test rather than guessing.

Can diabetes cause dry mouth at night?

Yes. Diabetes is a recognised cause of dry mouth, and high blood sugar can also bring thirst and night-time urination. A 2025 review estimated about 42% of people with type 2 diabetes report dry mouth.

How do I stop dry mouth at night naturally?

Treat a blocked nose, sleep on your side, use a humidifier, limit evening alcohol and caffeine, drink water through the day and try sugar-free gum in the evening. If it continues, see a doctor to look for an underlying cause.

Is dry mouth at night a sign of sleep apnea?

It can be one sign, because people with sleep apnea often breathe through their mouth. On its own it is not enough to suggest sleep apnea, but together with loud snoring, gasping or daytime sleepiness it is worth a sleep assessment.
